Mr Bedggood is one of thirteen members appointed to the Air Quality Monitoring Network Advisory Committee. He will play an important role in facilitating community consultation and providing input into establishing the network. “The Thoroughbred Breeding Industry in the Hunter Valley is a significant industry, employer and investor. Air quality is of paramount importance to our industry and to the health and wellbeing of our people, community and region.” “I am pleased to represent the Thoroughbred Breeders, the largest agricultural industry in the Hunter Valley, on this Advisory Committee” Mr Bedggood said. The Upper Hunter Air Quality Monitoring Network will establish up to 14 air-quality (dust) monitoring stations which will also monitor wind speed and wind direction. “Credible, reliable and publicly available real time monitoring is essential to ensure that air pollutants in the Hunter Valley remain within acceptable world health standards and limits,” Mr Bedggood said. “Given the level of community concern regarding the Hunter Valley’s air quality, I welcome the NSW Government’s initiative to establish this Advisory Committee. It is a step in the right direction to providing our community with real-time reporting, health alerts and advice on our region’s air quality. It is an opportunity we should not waste.“ Mr Bedggood continued. The Hunter Valley is home to Australia’s multi-billion dollar Thoroughbred Breeding Industry. The Hunter Valley is one of three Centres of Thoroughbred Breeding Excellence in the world – alongside Kentucky in the USA and Newmarket in the UK. It contains the second largest concentration of thoroughbred studs in the world, outside Kentucky USA, produces approximately half of all thoroughbred horses born in Australia annually and represents 70 percent (in volume) and 80 to 90 per cent (in value) of Australia’s Thoroughbred exports. Maintaining a healthy balance between our industry, our community, our environment and the coal mining operations that surround us is of paramount importance to our sustainable future.
